According to San Diego State University’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, only 12% of protagonists in the top 100 domestic grossing film are female (2014). This is below the mere 16% which was found in their 2002 study. This plummet in women lead protagonists is due to the fact that Hollywood is constantly seeking out younger actresses. And let’s face it they can.
Netflix has been a source for numerous popular television series in the past few years. Some of these include: Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, and Arrested Development. In conjunction, a series of particular interest this season is, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”. This is not the first series created by comedienne Tina Fey, however it certainly has darker undertones than, “30 Rock”, which therefore allows it to be a contestant of the unique.
This PSA has been mentioned by several popular news outlets: Huffington Post, The Guardian, and Indie Wire being just a few. And unlike any other widespread PSA, this one lacks any information on health and safety. So what is it about? Male representation in the entertainment industry…or the lack thereof.
